High school senior Katie Kee didn’t always enjoy studying STEM (the acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics) coursework, although she puts it a little more bluntly. “I basically hated STEM,” said Kee. Today, she feels differently.
Kristen Lew’s LinkedIn page describes her as a passionate mental health activist. She manages her own nonprofit and a podcast, for which she interviews top mental health experts. She lobbies for improved mental health policies. She was named one of Orange County’s 125 most influential people for 2023.
In a new partnership with Girls Inc. of Orange County, Chapman University’s Fowler School of Engineering is helping girls prepare for careers in engineering and other STEM fields. Girls Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold.
Emily Olvera is the keynote speaker for the Girls Inc. of Orange County 70th anniversary gala, and she’s well equipped to talk about the program and its benefits. “Girls Inc. saved me,” she said. “I say that in the realest sense. I was in a very dark place."
